Book Launch for Island Authors - Sat Apr 27

Please join Lael Whitehead, Debbie Bowles and Helen O'Brian at the Community Centre, Saturday April 27 at 4:30 pm for the joint launch of their recently published books for all ages, but particularly for children.

Lael's book, Kaya Stormchild, is a novel set in a landscape evocative of BC’s coast. It is a gripping adventure story imbued with an earth-centred spirituality.

Debbie Bowles not only illustrated Helen's book but has just published a picture book called Lucy in the Sky inspired by her love of nature and written whilst experiencing a rather challenging west coast winter in the forest.

Fin's Swim: 21 Days on the Fraser River, is a recent work of non-fiction by Helen. It is the story of marathon swimmer Fin Donnelly's 1,400 kilometer swim down the Fraser River. Natural history, ecology, European and First nations history, industry, settlement and development are woven into the adventure, giving the reader a sense of the power and importance of the river to British Columbia.

Please celebrate with us and with Fin, now an NDP Member of Parliament, who will be joining us. Delicious refreshments will be available.

NFB Film Night - The Chocolate Farmer - Fri Apr 19

The Mayne Island Library presents a public screening of the NFB new release, “The Chocolate Farmer"

In an unspoiled corner of Belize, cacao farmer and father Eladio Pop manually works his plantation as did his Mayan ancestors, as a steward of the land. The film captures a year in the life of the Pop family as they struggle to preserve their values in a world that is dramatically changing around them. A lament for cultures lost, The Chocolate Farmer challenges our deeply held assumptions of progress.

Mayne Island Youth Park Survey

The Mayne Island Parks & Recreation Commission has created an ad-hoc committee to determine if there is enough interest in building a new park on Mayne Island that focuses on the youth of Mayne Island residents.

Our parks have done a great job at providing locations and equipment for the little children to enjoy, but the older children are limited in outdoor activity. The initiative is to gather enough support from our community and visitors through the survey to encourage Mayne Island Parks & Recreation to support and move forward with the project. The park's focus will be on the adolescent ages of our community with skateboarding and BMX elements, as well as a hangout place for them to congregate and socialize.
