Burns Supper: Sat Jan 27

Come celebrate Scotland's Immortal Bard - Robbie Burns, January 27th, at the Agricultural Hall. Doors open at 5:30, dinner starts at 6 pm sharp.

Join us for a rollicking good time, Scottish style. Potluck supper, toasts and speeches, haggis, pipers, and singalong, followed by ceilidh dancing for those who wish. BYOB and bring a dish to share. Wear plaid if you've got it, or come as you are. Every one welcome (you don't have to have even a wee drop of Scottish blood to attend!)

Come join us for Tai Chi. You’ve thought about taking or returning to Tai Chi classes? Want a gentle exercise that improves your balance, improves your health? Need to learn something new to stimulate your brain? Come join us for Tai Chi on Mondays at the Community Centre.

Tai Chi is an ancient martial art based on Qigong and “internal” or soft style. There are several styles of Tai Chi. The Yang style postures are wide and comfortable. Yang style is more suitable for common people with no martial art training. In Yang style Tai Chi, the structure is not strict and demanding, the body is upright, and the movements are smooth, light, agile and rooted. Yang style 24 Form was created in China in 1956. It is a simplified form that contains all the essential principles of the 108 Form. This shortened form reduces the time required to learn the exercise. It is a nice introductory Form.

Boating Courses for January

The dates for the following courses are now set. Please contact Bryan Westby, bcwestby@shaw.ca or (250) 539-3412, if you wish to attend them. All courses are at the Church House (360 Georgina Pt. Rd.) from 7 - 9 pm. These courses are free to AMIB members but non-members can join for $10 (single) or $20 (family). 1. Boat Safety Equipment – One evening – January 11. Make sure you have the necessary safety equipment aboard your boat so you can avoid those large fines. Covers flares, radios, fire extinguishers, etc.

2. Reading charts – One evening – January 18. Charts describe not only where the water is but also the characteristics of the waterway and seabed. They show the shape of the coast, location of islands and hazards, navigation markers, warnings of hazards, the height of bridges and other obstructions, and offer much more additional information.

3. Understanding the weather forecast – One evening – January 25. This course gives a description of weather on BC’s coast particularly the Spring and Fall challenges that Mother Nature throws at us. This includes a familiarization with weather systems and terminology, an understanding of Marine weather forecasts and describes where to obtain good weather information at home and on the water.
